LAXÁ | DÖLUM LODGE

Over the years, Laxá í Dölum’s reputation as one of the great international Atlantic salmon fishing destinations has grown steadily. As its fame grew, it became popular with a privileged group of famous public figures. Golf champion Jack Nicklaus and astronaut Neil Armstrong are just two examples of the famous personalities that have fished its waters.

Year after year, this river has placed among the best in Iceland both in terms of total annual catch and in terms of captures per rod day. The total 10-year average catch is 1,226 salmon during an 80-day season. The bulk of these fish are salmon ranging from 5 to 12 pounds, although every season fish in the 18-to-20-pound range are caught here.

The majority of the pools offer easy access by four-wheel drive vehicles, much to the delight of fishermen who prefer avoiding long hikes on difficult terrain to get to the fishing. Flowing through a wide valley, the lower river offers a number of pools ideal for hitching.

Generally the best dates to fish Laxá í Dölum fall between mid-July until the end of the season. However, the moments of best fishing are determined more by water conditions than tides or specific dates. That said, even during very low water conditions, Laxá í Dölum continues producing captures.

It is best fished with a 9 - 10ft 7 or 8 wt, or if preferred, an 11ft switch rod. Tippet should be 10 - 15lb breaking strains and classic Icelandic fly patterns such as micro hitching tubes, small silver and black trebles in sizes 8-16, black and red Frances tied of small trebles along with sparse Sunray Shadows from 2 to 4” total fly length.

Laxá í Dölum Lodge has been recently renovated. It has a warm but stylish interior, lit by scented candles in the evening, giving it a luxurious feel. There are 6 en-suite twin rooms which can accommodate a group of up to 12 anglers when sharing rods. The main living area consists of a comfortable area to relax in with large leather Chesterfield sofas, a bar area for guests’ drinks and a spacious dining table.

The lodge chef ensures that cuisine is of an exceptional standard, with all tastes and diets catered for. An outdoor sauna and a cold-water pool with a waterfall from a mountain stream complete the upscale experience.
