TRIP REPORTS

CAYO CRUZ, NOVEMBER 2023
BY BILL FIDDES

As a novice fly fisherman of a little over 12 months, I considered I was doing pretty well. Taught by an ex-England team member, I was shown the basics of casting, and began catching some decent trout on a regular basis, really taking to this new style of fishing. I had watched a guy fly casting years before and was struck with the technique and skill of it all. “One day…” I said to myself and continued with my pursuit of carp.

CAYO CRUZ, NOVEMBER 2023
BY COLIN MACLEOD

I had the distinct pleasure of hosting a group of 8 anglers to the flats fisher's paradise that is Cayo Cruz.

The experience of the group ranged from complete beginner to seasoned angler but no matter what your level of competence, all anglers were appropriately catered for.

The week began with unseasonably hot and calm weather and even the guides complained of the heat! Such settled conditions are not best suited to permit fishing, but this was more than compensated for by some excellent bonefishing and the unexpected presence of good numbers of tarpon.

CAYO PAREDON, NOVEMBER 2023
BY COLIN MACLEOD

I had the immense pleasure of hosting a group of 8 anglers for the above trip, on behalf of Go Fishing Worldwide. Mac and Geoff who joined me to fish at Cayo Cruz the previous week accompanied me on the short trip to Paredon to enjoy a second week of fishing.

FLATS FLY FISHING SCHOOL

Last month I was fortunate to attend the Go Fishing Worldwide annual ‘Flats Fly Fishing School’. What follows is a brief report from the trip.

There was a palpable sense of excitement amongst the group as our small aircraft touched down on Crooked Island. The aerial views of countless atolls and white sand flats during the flight had whet everyone’s appetite for the fishing ahead, and on stepping out of the plane the tropical Bahamian climate provided a welcome change from the cold, wet weather left behind in London the day before.

TROUT FISHING HEAVEN
BY SIMON HOLME

Some pools you arrive at and can sense a big fish lives there. The one I was stood at was situated on a large bend; boulders were littered throughout, and despite the gin clear water it was too deep to make out the bottom in the neck. It was the best trout habitat I’d found in five months of fishing through New Zealand, and given the stamp of fish elsewhere in this well-known river it was likely to be harbouring a sizeable specimen.
