On the north shore of Cuba's eastern province of Camaguey lies the Cayo Romano (formerly known as Cayo Cruz) fishery, an expansive network of flats, lagoons, and untouched estuaries. Covering approximately 366 square kilometres, the sport fishing area offers each skiff an average of over 50 square kilometres to explore daily. This nearly untouched region is one of Cuba’s most pristine and biologically diverse ecosystems.
The flats at Cayo Romano feature a mix of firm white sand and a semi-solid mottled bottom, making it an excellent location for wading. Similar to Los Roques in terms of the extensive wadeable areas, this destination allows anglers to wade for hours without needing to return to the boat, if they so wish. Cayo Romano embodies the characteristics of a newly discovered, untouched fishing spot, with an abundance of fish that haven’t been heavily targeted by anglers. Combined with the natural beauty of the cays and the crystal-clear waters, it creates an unforgettable fishing experience.
Bonefish in the area typically average around four pounds, though it’s not uncommon for guests to catch fish in the ten-pound range during their stay. Tailing bonefish are a common sight, with fish seen in singles, pairs, and even schools of hundreds. The fishery is particularly renowned for its excellent permit fishing, where guests can expect frequent opportunities to target permit throughout the day. Few destinations offer the chance to fish for large bonefish daily while consistently getting shots at permit.
Cayo Cruz also offers two prime locations for tarpon fishing, with fish sizes ranging from 30 to 90 pounds. Guides often reserve these spots for anglers aiming for a Grand Slam. In addition to permit, bonefish, and tarpon, the area is home to a variety of other challenging species, including mutton snapper, snook, cubera snapper, jack crevalle, and barracuda.
